2024 Winter Students' Council Election

My name is Frescia Marie Joseph and I am currently a first year business student. Through my commitment as Norquest International Volunteer, RBC ambassador and Business case competitor I have gained communication, leadership and organizational skills, that I can use when representing our faculty and working towards a more engaged, supported and united community.

Some of the surface level goals I have for the position are:

1. Encourage inclusive involvement of students: I want Norquest College student’s become as socially active as possible and they can get the most out of their experience here on campus. Promote diverse student activities and events by understanding students interests and promoting events that resonate with diverse community.

2.Support student’s mental health: I want to ensure that student’s voices are heard by serving as a bridge between student and administration. Make Norquest a safe place where we do not have any stigma about mental health issues and actively listen to students concerns and opinions.

3. Weekly Wellness Tip: Create and distribute weekly wellness tips via emails, social media, or posters around the campus. This tips could include simple strategies for stress management, time management techniques and reminders to prioritize self.

My name is Girish, and I am currently in my second year of the Business Administration diploma program, specializing in Management. Let me take a moment to walk you through my journey at NorQuest and why I believe I am the best fit to represent you.

From the very beginning of my college experience, I immersed myself in contributing to the vibrant opportunities of our college community. In the Fall term, I proudly served as AN INTERNATIONAL NORQUEST VOLUNTEER, organizing events such as Diwali celebrations, Talent shows, and Supervising the Carnival. These experiences allowed me to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and foster a sense of inclusivity.

One of my proudest achievements during this time was HOSTING THE GLOBAL CAFE for the first time, showcasing our college’s rich cultural diversity.

Additionally, my involvement in creating promotional videos for the college’s social media portal not only garnered attention from fellow students and instructors but also drew comments and engagement from our college’s PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENTS, DEANS, and other esteemed faculty members on LinkedIn and In-person. Their engagement on my LinkedIn posts speaks to the rapport I’ve established, ensuring that your concerns and ideas will be communicated at the highest levels.

In recognition of my dedication, I was selected for the prestigious role of CAREER CENTER AMBASSADOR after a rigorous selection process. This role provided me with the opportunity to interact with career coaches, recruiters, and fellow students, further expanding my knowledge and network.

As a PEER MENTOR, I have been privileged to guide not only my mentee but also other students on their paths to success. I firmly believe that no one is born with a cape of perfection, and together, we can support each other in achieving our goals.

My commitment to NorQuest College has been acknowledged through the “CERTIFICATION OF RECOGNITION” for exceptional dedication as an International Volunteer in Fall 2023. I also had the honor of becoming the “FIRST RUNNER-UP” at the In-house Business Case Competition 2023 and am gearing up to compete in the prestigious “ALBERTA DEAN’S BUSINESS CASE COMPETITION 2024.”

In the Winter term of 2024, I represented each and every NorQuest College student as a “STUDENT PANELIST,” gaining valuable insights into the concerns and aspirations of our diverse student body.

I am writing to enthusiastically apply for the position of Student Council Representative at NorQuest College. Throughout my academic journey here, I’ve been deeply involved in various extracurricular activities, nurturing my passion for fostering positive change within our school community. My experiences in leadership roles, notably in school as a head boy, have honed my ability to effectively communicate, listen, and collaborate. If chosen as a Student Council Representative, I am committed to amplifying the voices of my peers, advocating for their needs, and working diligently with both students and faculty to implement initiatives that enhance our college’s spirit, inclusivity, and overall experience. With a strong sense of dedication and a genuine desire to serve, I am eager to contribute to the growth and success of our college as a Student Council Representative.

Vision:

To foster growth within a community that has successfully diversified over the years of efforts of the current community within and beyond the Faculty of Business, Environment, and Technology. I envision enhancing students’ overall experience campus-wide by advocating for the involvement of students in making decisions alongside the guidance of the department heads. I would also love to continue sharing with the students more events that will liven up their days.

Based on my informal survey of current and previous students of NorQuest College, here are some proposals I’d like to present for the overall growth of the community:

1. Be THE VOICE: I am aware that this is the one duty that a representative holds. But, I have gathered information that most students are unaware of who the representatives of their departments are and how to reach them. I have been doing this ever since I became a mentor, I ensure to open my doors to all inquiries, making sure I redirect questions to the right personnel if they fall outside of my scope.

2. Student-Driven Event Planning: Our events at SANQC are already spectacular and are student-centric. As I asked the question to the community how can we better serve the students, they indicated that the events should change from time to time, offering different types of events with help and suggestions from students.

Introduce a semi-annual survey to gather student opinions on event preferences and suggestions. This initiative will ensure that SANQC events reflect the diverse interests of our student body, moving beyond the repetitive events each semester to include new, innovative, and inclusive activities.

3. Collaborative Event Development: Introduction of clubs and connections with other universities to promote NorQuest Students’ interests and talents. Here are some gathered suggestions:

A. Bhangra Club: As I was researching UofA’s programs, I stumbled upon their Bhangra Club and saw that some NorQuest Students are interested in having one for our college. This would also open up opportunities for our talented students who are just hidden by the lack of opportunity to showcase their talents and have limited connections. Additionally, a lot of students from different cultures were fascinated by the Bhangra performances from the previous events, this will bring all the students together to have a closer bond.

B. Mom’s and Dad’s Club or Committee: As I am friends with a lot of students with families, most of them have a hard time with seeking education for their children, daycare fees, and other necessities while they are adjusting here in Canada. A club or committee that helps them navigate their way would be a great help as I know how hard it is to adjust alone, what more when you have kids to
attend and provide to?

C. Volunteers Club: I have noticed that NorQuest College is filled with students who love sharing and giving back to the community. The current representatives can do this by gathering information on what is out there when it comes to volunteering. This will help students exercise their love for philanthropy and it will also be a good look on their resumes.

4. Increased Communication: Insurance Benefits and SANQC services As my video for the International Office surfaced, a lot were surprised that there’s a free massage offered by SANQC as a part of the Health and Dental Insurance.

A. Health and Dental Insurance Awareness: Launch an awareness campaign to educate students about their health and dental insurance coverage, including how to access these benefits.

B. Free Services Highlight: Increase advertising of the available discounts and free services, such as massage therapy, that students are entitled to through SANQC fees. This will include informational booths, social media campaigns, and collaboration with service providers to host awareness events.

5. Feedback and Continuous Improvement

I was inspired to run as I have gathered enough information on what the student needs and would love to help implement them as much as I can. I believe that SANQC is already at its growing nature giving out excellence within the community. But, I am sure there is more that the students would want as growth is needed with every evolving community.

A. Open Forums and Feedback Sessions: Establish regular open forums and feedback sessions where students can voice their concerns, suggestions, and experiences directly to SANQC representatives, ensuring continuous improvement and responsiveness to student needs.

B. Online Suggestion Box: Implement an online platform for students to submit ideas, feedback, and suggestions anonymously, enabling continuous dialogue between the student body and SANQC.
As your representative, I am committed to making SANQC more transparent, inclusive, and responsive to your needs. Together, we can build a community that celebrates diversity, supports every student, and enriches our college experience. I pledge to listen to your voices, advocate for your interests, and work tirelessly to implement these initiatives for the betterment of our faculty and NorQuest College wholistically.

Myself, Navansh and I am currently an international student here at NorQuest College, I want to create a positive change on campus as this position gives an opportunity to enhance your knowledge and learn new skills as well as helping other students on campus, As a student deeply invested in the welfare and progress of our educational community, I believe that together, we can shape a future that is not only academically enriching but also fosters a sense of unity, inclusivity, and innovation. Hello everyone, my name is Shivam, and I am an international student pursuing my Business administration Diploma in Norquest College. I am a dweller of North-Indian region emigrated to Canada for my higher education. Along with my studies, I do like to indulge myself in different activities like working part-time, travelling with friends, volunteering in co-curricular activities etcetera.

Now the question arises, why do I think that I would be a good student’s council representative?

I simply believe in myself that I have the passion for serving our student community. While working with SANQC as a campus safe walker, I learned various skills and improved many of them too and leadership is one of them. I would like to bring them to the table utilizing it for student welfare. Moreover, when I volunteer in college events organized by SANQC, I feel really motivated and its happy to see that students can enjoy and have some fun by participating in different activities. BINGO and HEADPHONE PARTY, in my opinion, are the best examples of stress relieving activities helping us to take a break from our hectic schedule in daily lives. These reasons provide me a strong feeling that I should also be a part of this helpful organization.

From personal vision, I see this position of student’s council representative as a career booster which will let me open myself to the world of original workplace at an early age.

In addition to this, I stand before Norquest students and my fellow mates with unwavering commitment and a clear vision for positive change. I am dedicated, approachable, and ready to work tirelessly to enhance our student experience. Let’s build a stronger, more vibrant community together.

I am Umang Sharma, a dedicated and active student volunteer currently in my 3rd semester.

With a deep understanding of our community and its resources, I believe I am the ideal candidate to serve as your Students’ Council Representative.

My extensive involvement in the college community, has provided me with valuable insights into the needs and concerns of our diverse student body.

For those who already know me, I am committed to continuing the positive impact I’ve made. For those unfamiliar, I assure you that choosing me as your representative will not be a decision you regret. NorQuest is our college and we have the right to voice our opinions about what we need for a positive learning experience. I am dedicated to work on areas that may not have been previously considered.

My primary focus will be addressing the pressing issues of bullying and harassment both on campus and online. Your safety and well-being are my top priorities, and I will strive to create a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.

As your representative, I will always be accessible and approachable. Whether you have concerns, suggestions, or just need someone to talk to, I am here for you. My experience and involvement in the community have equipped me with the skills necessary to address and resolve various challenges that students may face.

I understand the challenges faced by our international students, particularly those living alone. One of my initiatives will be to advocate for extended cafeteria hours to better accommodate the needs of our diverse student population.
