Who is eligible to vote?
To be eligible to vote in the provincial election you must be:
- A Canadian citizen
- 18 years of age or older on Election Day
- An ordinary resident of Alberta
How can I decide where my ordinary residence is?
Ordinary residence is determined in accordance with the following rules:
- A person can have only one place of ordinary residence;
- A person’s ordinary residence is the place where the person lives and sleeps and to which, when the person is absent from it, the person intends to return; and,
- When a person leaves Alberta with the intention of becoming ordinarily resident outside Alberta, the person’s ordinary residence in Alberta ceases.
If you are studying away from home within the province of Alberta you may choose to vote from:
- The place you were living before you began your studies; or
- The place where you were living while pursuing your studies.
How do I register to vote?
Prior to heading to the polls, students should register online. Registering allows Election Alberta to add you to our List of Electors, so we can fast-track your ballot on at the polls. You can register at voterlink.ab.ca up until April 2, 2019.
If you have not registered, you can still vote by registering at the polls. To vote, you will first have to complete a declaration of elector at the poll. Authorized ID, one of which includes the students declared ordinary residence, is required to complete this form. For a complete list of authorized ID please head to elections.ab.ca/voters/faq/.
My ordinary residence is not where I am competing my studies, do I have to return to that location to vote?
If the student wishes to vote at the advance polls, they can attend any advance poll in the province to receive a ballot for the electoral division of their ordinary residence. If the student wishes to vote on Election Day, they will need to return to the assigned location identified for their ordinary residence.
How can I vote if I am out of the province during Advanced Polls and on Election Day?
Special ballot is a mail in ballot you may request if you are unable to vote during Advanced Polls and Election Day. You may request a special ballot at specialballot.elections.ab.ca/ to be mailed to your out of province location. A special ballot is a write-in ballot in which you write in the name of either the candidate for your electoral division or the name of the party you wish to support.
